Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, honest answers about nutrition, safety, sourcing, sustainability, and how to get the most out of Natty Nootz. No fluff — just real guidance for pet guardians who want to feed with confidence.

Product & Nutrition

What makes Natty Nootz different from other treats?

Most treats on the shelf are built for long, complex supply chains — big production runs, long warehouse time, and heavy reliance on preservatives, added flavors, and low-cost fillers so they can sit for a year or more before anyone opens the bag.

Natty Nootz is built the opposite way. We make small-batch, single-ingredient products in house, from organic, pasture-raised, grass-fed ingredients, and preserve them using freeze-drying instead of high heat or chemical additives. Freeze-drying locks in raw nutrients while making the treats shelf-stable.

From there, everything goes into airtight violet glass jars with an oxygen absorber, which helps protect against light and oxidation so the treats stay closer to the day they were made — not the day they finally reached a warehouse.

In short: just one ingredient, processed, cut, and packaged by hand, in our own facility — designed for peak freshness and transparency, not mass production.

Are Natty Nootz treats and toppers safe for both dogs and cats?

Yes. All Natty Nootz products are intentionally formulated as cross-species whole-food nutrition. Because each product is single-ingredient and free of additives, they are safe and highly digestible for both dogs and cats when used as directed.

What makes your sourcing different?

We use certified-organic, pasture-raised, and grass-fed ingredients exclusively sourced from the USA. No imports, no conventional feedlots, and no synthetic additives — ever. Everything is processed in-house in small batches for maximum quality control and traceability.

Are your products considered raw?

Our liver treats and topper are freeze-dried from raw, which preserves raw nutrition without heat. Shine Source (egg powder) and Joint Guard (eggshell with membrane) are gently cooked or dried as appropriate for safety, then milled to a fine texture. Each product page explains the exact process used.

What is the difference between liver treats and liver toppers?

Both are made from the same organic, grass-fed beef liver. The Vital Boost Liver Treats are whole freeze-dried bites. The Vital Boost Liver Topper is finely ground for easy mixing into food — ideal for picky eaters, seniors, and pets needing additional nutrient density without extra chew effort.

Is beef liver safe to feed every day?

Yes, in small amounts. Liver is extremely nutrient-dense, so a little provides meaningful benefits. It’s best used as a topper or treat alongside a balanced diet rather than as a primary calorie source. Follow our feeding recommendations and your veterinarian’s guidance, especially for growing or sensitive pets.

Does liver support anal gland and digestive health?

High-quality organ meats contribute to firm, well-formed stools when used appropriately, which naturally supports anal gland expression and overall digestive health. As with any concentrated ingredient, introduce slowly and observe stool quality as you go.

Why choose grass-fed liver over conventional?

Grass-fed, pasture-raised liver tends to have a more favorable fatty acid profile and higher levels of certain vitamins and minerals compared to conventional grain-fed sources. It also aligns with our standards for humane, low-stress animal husbandry and cleaner ingredient sourcing.

Do your egg-based products support skin and coat health?

Yes. Shine Source provides natural fatty acids, complete amino acids, and yolk-derived nutrients that support coat radiance, skin elasticity, and healthy shedding cycles from the inside out.

Do eggs support cognitive function?

Eggs naturally contain choline, cholesterol, and key amino acids that contribute to brain health, nerve function, and cognitive support in dogs and cats. Shine Source offers a convenient way to add egg-derived nutrition to everyday meals.

What does eggshell calcium and membrane support?

Joint Guard provides whole-food calcium from organic eggshells plus the natural membrane. Together they support healthy bones, teeth, joints, connective tissues, and can play a role in maintaining firm, well-structured stools.

Do your products contain any preservatives, flavors, or fillers?

No. Every Natty Nootz product is single ingredient. There are no synthetic preservatives, flavors, colors, gums, or fillers — just the one ingredient listed on the label.

Are Natty Nootz ingredients human grade?

Our sourcing aligns with human-grade ingredient standards for quality and handling, though products are formulated and labeled specifically for dogs and cats. We focus on purity, transparency, and traceability in every step of the process.

Feeding & Daily Use

How much should I feed my dog or cat?

Each product has its own recommended range based on body weight and overall diet. You’ll find guidance on every product page as well as a full overview on our Feeding Recommendations page. Always adjust based on your companion’s body condition, stool quality, and your veterinarian’s advice.

How should I introduce organ meats to a sensitive-stomach pet?

Start very small — often as little as 1/8–¼ teaspoon of topper or 1–2 small treats per day — and gradually increase over 5–7 days. Monitor stool quality and overall comfort and increase only if everything looks good. If your pet has a history of digestive disease, involve your veterinarian early.

Can I combine multiple Natty Nootz toppers?

Yes. Many guardians combine Vital Boost (liver), Shine Source (egg), and Joint Guard (eggshell) in small amounts for layered support. Keep total add-ons modest relative to the full diet and increase gradually to avoid overwhelming digestion or mineral balance.

Are your products suitable for puppies and kittens?

In many cases, yes — but growing animals have specific nutrient needs. Very small amounts of liver, egg, or calcium-rich toppers can be appropriate, especially as accents to a complete, growth-appropriate diet. Always consult your veterinarian before adding any concentrated organ or calcium source to a puppy or kitten’s daily routine.

Are your products suitable for senior pets?

Yes. Seniors often benefit from highly digestible protein, amino acids, and joint-supportive nutrients. Our toppers and powders are easy to chew, mix, and digest — but serving sizes may need to be smaller, especially in pets with liver, kidney, or metabolic concerns. Partner with your veterinarian for individualized guidance.

Can I use toppers as training rewards?

Absolutely. Many guardians crumble liver treats into tiny pieces or incorporate toppers into homemade training bites. Because the ingredients are concentrated, small amounts are very motivating — especially for picky eaters or scent-driven dogs and cats.

Will egg toppers or liver cause weight gain?

Not when used as directed. The recommended amounts are designed to enhance nutrition, not overwhelm daily calories. If your companion is prone to weight gain, simply reduce other treats or adjust base food slightly to accommodate the added calories from toppers.

Can I rehydrate freeze-dried treats or topper?

Yes. Adding warm (not hot) water creates a softer texture and can make the aroma even more enticing. This is especially useful for seniors, small mouths, or pets who prefer softer foods.

Do freeze-dried products make pets drink more water?

They can. Freeze-dried foods are naturally dry, so many pets intuitively drink a bit more to balance hydration. You can also add a splash of warm water to meals for extra moisture if desired.

Do your products help with picky eating?

Yes — especially Vital Boost liver and Shine Source egg powder. They add high-value scent and flavor that often transforms a “maybe later” bowl into a “lick it clean right now” experience. Start with small amounts and adjust to your pet’s preference.

Can I use Natty Nootz products with raw, kibble, and home-cooked diets?

Yes. Our products are designed to be modular — they work alongside raw, lightly cooked, canned, or high-quality kibble diets. The key is to keep total add-ons balanced relative to your pet’s full nutritional plan.

Ingredients, Safety & Quality

How do you ensure product safety?

We control our process end-to-end: sourcing from trusted organic, pasture-raised farms, processing in small batches, and monitoring moisture and quality closely. We follow strict sanitation protocols and safety checks designed to support a stable, shelf-ready product when stored as directed.

Are your products irradiated or chemically treated?

No. We do not irradiate or chemically sterilize our products. Our approach focuses on clean sourcing, controlled processing, and careful drying to support both safety and nutrient integrity.

Are eggs a common allergen for dogs and cats?

Eggs can be a food allergen for some dogs and cats. If your companion has a known egg sensitivity or a complex history of allergies, introduce Shine Source very gradually — or discuss it with your veterinarian before use. Stop immediately if you see signs of itching, digestive upset, or discomfort.

Is liver safe for pets with pancreatitis or special medical conditions?

Pets with pancreatitis, metabolic disease, or other medical conditions often require very specific fat and protein levels. In these cases, any rich food — including liver — should only be used under direct veterinary guidance. When in doubt, ask your veterinarian before introducing organ meats or new toppers.

Do you test for heavy metals or contaminants?

We prioritize suppliers and processes that align with organic and pasture-based standards designed to reduce contamination risk. Where appropriate, we work with our partners to verify quality and purity so you can feel confident about what goes into each jar.

Are antibiotics or growth hormones used in your sourcing?

No. Our organic standards prohibit the routine use of antibiotics and synthetic growth hormones in the animals whose organ meats or eggs we source. We choose partners who align with this approach to animal care and ingredient integrity.

How long do your products last once opened?

When stored in their violet-glass jars with the lid tightly closed, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, our products maintain best quality for many months. Refer to the best-by date on each jar and always use your senses — if something ever seems off, do not feed it.

How do I store Natty Nootz treats and toppers?

Keep your jars tightly sealed at room temperature, away from heat and humidity. Avoid storing near dishwashers, stoves, or steamy areas. For refills, always transfer to your clean, fully dry Natty Nootz jar right after opening to protect freshness.

Sustainability & Packaging

Why do you use violet glass instead of plastic or clear glass?

Violet glass helps protect sensitive nutrients from light and oxidation, preserving freshness and potency better than clear or amber glass. It also eliminates plastic contact and is designed to be reused again and again with compostable refills — reducing waste over time.

Are your refill bags compostable?

Yes. Our Vital Boost Liver Treat refills are packaged in compostable bags designed to break down in typical home compost conditions. They’re meant to refill your existing violet-glass jar while keeping plastic out of the equation as much as possible.

Are refills available for every product?

Right now, refills are available for select products where packaging and safety requirements align best with our compostable materials. We’re actively working to expand refill availability as we can do so responsibly and safely.

Why aren’t refill bags resealable?

Our refill bags are designed to be opened once and poured directly into your clean, dry Natty Nootz jar to maintain freshness. This reduces plastic hardware, keeps oxygen exposure minimal, and supports a jar-first, refill-second ritual that’s better for both nutrition and waste reduction.

How eco-friendly is your shipping packaging?

Our shipping materials — including mailers, paper fill, tape, and labels — are fully recyclable or compostable, depending on your local facilities. We design every step, from jar to box, to minimize plastic and prioritize reusability and renewability wherever possible.

How do I clean my jar before refilling?

Rinse your jar with warm water and a mild, unscented soap if needed, then allow it to fully air-dry. Make sure there is no residual moisture before refilling — moisture shortens shelf life and can affect quality.
